I joined the United States Air Force in January of 1962.Whenever I would come home on leave, I would ask Dad to play the mandolin.Nobody played the mandolin like my father.He could touch your soul with the tones that came out of that old mandolin.He seemed to shine when he was playing.You could see his pride in his ability to play so well for his family.
When Dad was younger, he worked for his father on the farm.His father was a farmer and sharecropped a farm for the man who owned the property.In 1950, our family moved from the farm.Dad had gained employment at the local limestone quarry.When the quarry closed in August of 1957, he had to seek other employment.He worked for Owens Yacht Company in Dundalk, Maryland and for Todd Steel in Point of Rocks, Maryland.While working at Todd Steel, he was involved in an accident.His job was to roll angle iron onto a conveyor so that the welders farther up the production line would have it to complete their job.On this particular day Dad got the third index finger of his left hand mashed between two pieces of steel.The doctor who operated on the finger could not save it, and Dad ended up having the tip of the finger amputated.He didn\'t lose enough of the finger where it would stop him picking up anything, but it did impact his ability to play the mandolin.
After the accident, Dad was reluctant to play the mandolin.He felt that he could not play as well as he had before the accident.When I came home on leave and asked him to play he would make excuses for why he couldn\'t play.Eventually, we would wear him down and he would say \"Okay, but remember, I can\'t hold down on the strings the way I used to\" or \"Since the accident to this finger I can\'t play as good\".For the family it didn\'t make any difference that Dad couldn\'t play as well.We were just glad that he would play.When he played the old mandolin it would carry us back to a cheerful, happier time in our lives.\"Davey, Davey Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier\", would again be heard in the little town of Bakerton, West Virginia.
In August of 1993 my father was diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer.He chose not to receive chemotherapy treatments so that he could live out the rest of his life in dignity.About a week before his death, we asked Dad if he would play the mandolin for us.He made excuses but said \"okay\".He knew it would probably be the last time he would play for us.He tuned up the old mandolin and played a few notes.When I looked around, there was not a dry eye in the family.We saw before us a quiet humble man with an inner strength that comes from knowing God, and living with him in one\'s life.Dad would never play the mandolin for us again.We felt at the time that he wouldn\'t have enough strength to play, and that makes the memory of that day even stronger.Dad was doing something he had done all his life, giving.As sick as he was, he was still pleasing others.Dad sure could play that Mandolin!

我的家乡，曾经流行过一种游戏。那时，吃一包干脆面，里面会赠送一张圆形硬卡。卡片上印着花花绿绿的图案，有葫芦娃、孙悟空、奥特曼、圣斗士、黑猫警长、还有成龙，反正是电视上流行什么，上面就印什么。这些卡片可以用来相互斗卡，用自己的卡把对方的卡敲翻就算赢，获胜者就可以拥有对方的那张卡。这游戏的成功之处在于，充分地调动起每个人的收藏欲望和竞争意识。我们一帮臭小子拼命地吃，吃得满嘴长泡，就是为了能存一摞卡片，然后一较高低。
当时，我们每个人都有好几套卡。我的卡片最多，大概有十几套，要用塑料桶才能装下。但是，住在我隔壁的一个小男孩，他叫小冰，跟我一样大，家庭条件很差。他只有一套卡，是一套灌篮高手。你要知道，灌篮高手算上赤木晴子，也最多只有九张而已。所以，我们没有一个人不嘲笑他，甚至带他一块玩。
我想，他当时的心情一定是自卑的。不过，后来的事实证明，自卑的人不该是他，而是我们。小冰就是拿着那九张灌篮高手，几乎赢走了我们所有人的卡。他敲卡的技巧极其迅猛，完全是一次一个。我们当时全都惊呆了„„

从MIT到MIT-纪念这段不平常的日子
很少发帖，这一帖，讲个故事。
我不过是个“超龄选手”，比普通本科生多学了三年半，比普通硕士生多学了一年。所以，故事的结局没什么值得惊讶。仅以此帖，纪念这段不平常的日子。
故事的结局：Offer，PhD @MIT，NSE，2012 fall，financial aistance will provide full tuition, health insurance and X,XXX$/m。
故事的时间序列：重庆大学本科 ->上海交大硕博转硕 ->VISA顺利的话MIT的PHD。
那么，故事就这样说起好了：
2007年，暑假。一切的开始。
去美国一个公司实习，周末公司带我们逛Boston，到了Cambridge，到了MIT。培训部的老板问我：What did you see。我说：Brilliant eyes。老板说：XX, you should go to MIT。当时，我只能尴尬一笑：May be.我，没有准备，没有勇气。
2008年，秋天。一个玩笑。
研究生入学，第一个室友放弃了交大的研究生去美国读硕士，他说：你如果早点来交大，你也会选择申请出国的，你没有环境。我觉得，也许是个玩笑。第一次看VOS晚会，我鼻子也会酸，我觉得，好像逝去了4年。
2011年，春天。每年今日，人走人留。
好几个同学毕业申请学校走了，我在干什么，不知道，失恋？实验？Both。这学期，带了个本科毕设，很有实力，去了UIUC，我很喜欢这个师弟，他比我有冲劲，在后来的申请过程中给了我莫大的帮助。在交大，大小导师对我都很好，我觉得我抹不开面子去提出国，也许，这些都是借口？当时觉得，推荐我去欧洲交流一次就好了，我就啥也不想了。这年春
天，我有了一个新的女朋友，当时我研二她大一，但她好像注定会改变我的人生。对于那次失恋，她评价说：你个纠结的男人，君子要成人之美。我觉得，我弱爆了。
2011年，夏天。有的人注定是打不开的箱子，有的人注定是打开箱子的钥匙。
某天，女友往平板电脑里拷了“老男孩”，我默默看了，默默愣了5分钟，默默的眼泪掉下来：作为80后，难道我的理想没有盛开就要枯萎么？她说：你的理想，你想清楚的事情，我就支持。我知道，她就是我缺失的勇气。我的梦，也许还活着。
2011年，10月。齐脚后跟斩断。
转硕申请批下来了，我要在两个半月内解决六个问题：TOEFL，GRE，申请材料，撰写SCI期刊，毕业论文实验和计算（出于信任，导师希望我不要用之前做的旧东西毕业，要做出新的内容），毕业论文投盲审。我不知道能不能挺过去，现实压得我心跳紊乱，呼吸急促。我只知道，我齐脚后跟把自己退路斩断了，只能朝前走。
倒计时两个半月，基本策略：保TOEFL和毕业，不保GRE。熬夜的事情我不做，熬不过去，我只能提高效率。早上9点到下午5点，在实验室组装新实验段，同时做数值计算；晚上6点之后，拿出单词本背单词，做TPO；11点准时睡觉。10月底考的TOEFL，勉强100分。女友帮搜集了很多机经，TPO和作文模板，受益匪浅。
2011年，11月。人可以为理想死，我为理想，不能“死”。
倒计时一个半月，基本策略：保申请材料，SCI期刊和毕业，不保GRE。新实验段组装完毕，回路改造完成。打压发现焊缝漏水，万恶的加工厂…焊缝补上了，实验段材料开始作怪：有机玻璃 ->破，普通玻璃 ->破，最后只能重新采购更加牢固的材料。时间在流逝。第一版申请材料被UIUC的师弟评的一文不值，有点沮丧，不过确实很有道理，意见也很有帮助。挑了感兴趣的学校投了六所，两所top，两所medium，两所保底。大小导师最给力，总是第一时间帮我投推荐信。时间真的在流逝。
第一篇SCI期刊，编辑说我的英文很烂，我仔细看了看，确实太着急投，烂到家了。所以简历上，这篇文章暂时只能写Under Review。时间你跑的太快了。
除去实验室、申请材料和SCI期刊，我还有3天*12个小时+7天*4个小时，GRE单词像海，时间像风，我用吸管使劲吸，能吸多少？能吸多少算多少吧。第一次做模考，倒计时内连题目都看不完，简直就是磨+烤。GRE考试前一晚，我站在7楼的阳台上往下看，往下
看，往下看…然后告诉自己，人可以为理想死，我为理想，不能死。大不了多吃一年交大的食堂。
其实结果可以预见，GRE不是一般挫，如果按旧分算，顶多1200。
整个11月，各种打击，我觉得我在崩溃的边缘，但我一直记得女朋友跟我说的一句话：到你挺过去的那一天，你回头看，这些都不算什么。
有的人，像一片落叶，落入你生命的河流，又被冲回岸边；而有的人，注定与你汇成大川，奔流去冒险。这个人就是我现在的女朋友。没有她，我熬不过这样的11月。
2011年，12月。悬，无悬。
倒计时半个月。实验还算顺利，数值计算花了些时间，多亏师弟给力一起做实验和处理数据。花了一个星期昏天黑地写出毕业论文，总算投了出去。SCI期刊有回复了，内容上没硬伤，采纳了几个师兄的意见，利索回复，不知主编是否满意。后来听说PSU来交大招PHD推荐生，要求为应届本科和硕士。我投了简历，但JD学院给的回复是：我们只推荐本科生，推荐硕士生不划算。我当时在想，要是推荐我去PSU那该是多美妙的事情。一切都在悬着，毕业论文盲审悬着，SCI期刊悬着，申请结果悬着。那就悬吧。
无悬念的是，一路走过，回头看，我的经历真的不算什么，我得到的帮助，却至关重要。我必须感激我女朋友和家人的支持，感激写推荐信的四位老师，感激一直仰仗其申请经验的UIUC师弟，感激帮我修改论文的导师和师兄，感激实验室借钱给我申请学校的同僚，感激帮助我完成实验的师弟和实验室师傅，还有很多其他人。
2012年，3月。后来。
后来，还发生了很多事情，但不重要了。只说两句话。One, instead of all.Both for my girl friend and for MIT.
这些就是故事的全部，一个西域女生带给我的新的人生，用这样的魂和这样的心去体会的人生—Soul of Lion, Heart of Ocean.

励志文章：心无所惧万事成
你是否曾经想过，如果可以随心所欲任意而为，那么人生将会是怎样一副光景？不可思议的是，我们之中的大多数人都能够这样生活，但是由于恐惧心理的存在，却又无法如愿。我们所惧怕的，不是对既定目标的追求，而是害怕追求目标可能会招致的失败。正是因此，许多人无法放手去做自己想要做的事情，而是一味的接收生活的施舍，把其奉为准则。但是，那些试图打破常规从而变得无所畏惧的人却可以在本文中寻得解决之道。
想要变得无所畏惧首先要克服对失败的恐惧。仅仅是因为害怕在实现目标的过程中将会出现的失败，大多数人绝不会去追求生活中真正想要的事物，他们找遍借口劝服自己不要这样做，而不是集中思考如何才能成功。事实上，失败的恶果绝不会胜过冒险所带来的欢乐。
培养“无所畏惧”的心理
这儿有一个简单的练习可以帮助你克服对失败的恐惧，然后逐步变得无所畏惧。首先，把你脑中的目标或是冒险写在一张纸上，然后在下方分出两栏，其中一栏为最坏的可能性，另一栏为最好的可能性。现在列出一些最坏的可能性，从1到10标出等级；1级为没有任何改变，10级为世界末日。如法炮制，列出最好的可能性并标出等级。请在此
坦诚面对自己，同时记住，世界上的物质总有淘汰之日，失而复得也总会有其时。想一想，在你的人生中真正重要的事物到底是什么，这是自我审视的一个好办法。在这个测试中人们发现，对于大多数人来说，最坏的可能性最高只能达到3至4级，但是最好的可能性（即在冒险的过程中他们必然会收获的东西）却可以达到9至10级。从不同角度看待这个问题，你将拥有完全不同的想法。
在“无所畏惧”中取得成功
这些练习的原理非常简单，现在，我将从社会中举证，告诉你一个真实的故事，故事的主人翁做了如上的练习从而变得无所畏惧。戴夫（出于隐私考虑已用化名）曾是洛杉矶一名有名望的律师。当时的他已经辛苦地工作了至少5年，正是需要休假的时候，同时他也在挣扎是否继续留在美国企业界里工作，于是他踏上了去巴西的旅途。在一次乘滑翔翼探险的时候，他感觉悠然自得，也正是在那时他意识到生活本该是这样，并且希望能够继续这样生活下去。（励志歌曲）所以，一回到洛杉矶的律师事务所，戴夫就辞掉了这份薪金优渥的工作，然后打包行囊南下搬到了巴西。现在，戴夫在巴西美丽的海岸边开了一家冲浪冒险公司，引导人们去体验生活。去追求这样的目标，人们是否都会认为戴夫太过疯狂了？也许吧！但戴夫知道，如果自己愿意他立马就可以重拾过去的生活，从离开的地方再次起步。他随时都可以找到一份与法律相关的工作，可以得到房子和车（这些不正是我们所看重的吗？）。
事实上，自从开始自己的事业之后戴夫得到过3次工作机会，且都涉及法律。如是这般，戴夫知道这次转变给他带来的收获远比失去的多。
你瞧，无所畏惧，追求人生中最重要的东西并不是一件可怕的事情。我们必将经历的每一个过程都包含着失败，但失败并非意味着我们就此放弃，这只能说明我们仍旧还在学习当中。当你把最坏的可能性与最好的可能性并排列出后，曾经被认为极富戏剧性的事物其实并非真的如此。你是否准备好取得成功，变得无所畏惧？方法就在你的面前，你只需做出决定。

成功并没有那么远
----遗失的美好 我们仿佛泥土中的种子在等待成功的照耀，在泥土中的日子也许黑暗艰难，但是只要向上生长，迟早能长出地面。因此不要害怕成功的遥遥无期，它并不需要我们认为的那么久的时间，也许只要你每天喝着咖啡闲坐发呆的那一点儿时间就够了。
有这样一个故事，一个成功人士的故事。以前有两个年轻人在一起画画，一个很有天赋，而另一个资质稍差。没过几年，那个很有天赋的人因为稍有成就，在灯花酒绿、纸醉金迷的生活中迷失了方向，几乎要放弃了画画。
而另一个资质稍差的人生活虽贫困，每天都要下地干活，空闲时还要砍柴，可是他始终没有放弃绘画。不论每天工作有多忙，他都要全神贯注地画上一小时，一直坚持再画画。 四十年后，他成功了，他摇身从湖南一个名不经传的小村的木匠，变成了全国闻名的画坛巨匠，他就是，齐白石。
在齐白石获得成功后，有一次，那个曾经和他一起学画画，最后放弃的人前来拜访他，那时，两个人都已经是白发苍苍的老人了。两个人在一起回忆了当年学画生涯，齐白石听到他一再地感叹美术生涯的艰难曲折，认为成功很艰难，也对自己的半途而废而悔恨叹息时，齐白石笑了笑说：“其实成功根本没有你想的那么遥远，也没那么难，我从一个木匠到现在的绘画大师，其实只是用了不过四年多的时间而已。”那个人诧异了，我也惊讶了。 我想：四年零四个月，这就是从一介普通的乡村青年变成一代大师所需的时间，其实我们又何须惊愕呢？成功的确离我们并不遥远。四年零四个月，每个人都会为这个短暂的日子而惊讶，但日子看似短暂，可是你知道吗？齐白石成功的真正原因并不是多少天，而是每天从不间断地坚持。
有人曾曰：成功和失败的距离并不远，往往只有一步之遥，就像两个人在大山中用斧子劈路前进，结果的不同大多时候不在于做了什么，而在于失败者在即将砍到山外，只剩薄薄一层石壁的时候丧失了信心，放弃了努力而停止。让我们记住这个比喻，再砍一斧子，走向成功把！

我经常与人分享“生活是主观的演绎，多于客观的分析”这句话。激励可 以诱之以利，也可以惧之以害，但是最有威力的激励是改变心态。以下几个励志小故事，我铭记于心，希望你也欣赏：
1、雕凿人生
在文艺复兴时期，意大利雕刻家米开朗基罗用了多年时间，完成了举世闻名的大理石雕刻，名为“戴维”，现在存放于佛罗伦萨美术学院。朋友问米开朗基罗雕凿出栩栩如生的戴维像的秘诀，他只是轻描淡写地说：“戴维本来就在这块大理石之内，我只是将不属于戴维的石块凿掉罢了！\"
激励的力量：
成功并非要改头换面，脱胎换骨，而是要将自己美好的“本来面目，呈现人前”。成功是恰如其份地展现自己的优点。
2、光明前景
有三个建筑工人，一天工作完了各自回家。
回家途中，第一个工人心里想：“要不是为了生活，我真不会做那砌砖工作，辛苦得很。”第二个工人心里想：“每天就是在砌墙，真是沉闷得叫人发疯。”第三个工人心里想：“我今天为了完成一所宏伟的教堂而努力，完成后教堂可容纳几百人做礼拜，这实在是一件极有意义的工程。”
激励的力量：
在生活中，你是在投诉、在愤怒，还是有所创造呢？你是在砌砖、砌墙，还是为有意义的目标前进呢？请紧记，将思想集中于光明前景。
3、积极行动
有一个小女孩吃早餐的时候，看见爸爸愁眉深锁，闷闷不乐，便对爸爸说：“爸爸，我在报纸看过一段报道，说态度积极的人，办事效率
较强，身体健康也比一般人好，你同意吗？\"
爸爸说：“当然正确，所以我每天都保持积极的态度。”
女儿再追问：“爸爸你今天为何不告诉你的脸，也要保持积极的态度呢？\"
爸爸听了女儿的话，脸上再展欢颜，并说：“你提醒了爸爸要言行一致。”
激励的力量：
著名心理学家威廉．詹姆士说：“我们快乐是因为我们微笑，而并非因为快乐而笑。”意思是行动往往能够影响心态，所以选择积极行动最为重要。
4、专注目前
有一位年轻人，到马戏班拜师，要学习走钢线的功夫。
几个月后，师傅认为年轻人已掌握了基础技巧，便要年轻人走上钢线，正式练习。虽然地面已装有安全网，可是在十多尺的高台上，心里实在战战兢兢。走了十多步之后，那年轻人往下看，越看心里越惊慌，差点儿失去重心。
就在这时，师傅在地面大声喝了一句话，再次取得平衡。那句话就是：“向前看！”
激励的力量：
你就是自己的师傅，当面对逆境和挑战，紧记对自己说：“向前看！专注目前，专注之中有力量。”
5、留意小节
有一天，米开朗基罗刚完成了一件作品，正要凝望作品沉思之际，一位朋友到访，问他正在想甚么。他答道：“我在构思，把雕像这部分修改一下，把那部分稍加琢磨，把这部分弄得柔和一些，使肌肉的线条突出一点……”朋友不耐烦地说：“这些都是小节而已！”
米开朗基罗很认真地回应说：“也许你可以这样说，但请你记着，将所有小节加起来，就是完美，而完美绝不是小节！
激励的力量：
“祸患常始于积微，智勇常困于所溺。”意思是灾祸和患难都是由小事开始，智慧和勇气常因为过分沉迷溺爱人或事而受到束缚。以上五个小故事，但愿对你会有点启发。我认为激励可以说之以理，也可以动之以情，当然要视不同风格的人的需要，但是取得情理兼备的平衡就更为理想。说之以理可以激励人脑，动之以情可以激励人心。

石缝间的一棵树
一直以来，我常常为石缝间的那棵树而感怀。脑海里总是浮现出令人难忘的那棵树。总想写下一些能启迪人心灵的感想，总想赞美这倔强而顽劲的生命，总想追溯那生存毅力和拼搏精神的源泉所在。
在莲花山庄陕电诗会开会的时候，诗会组织了游少华山。也就是在那次采风时，我看到了撼动我心灵的那棵树。它就生长在石缝间。它的根部被石缝夹得遍体鳞伤，被扭曲成像结痂伤疤一样的皮肤凹凸不平、纹路粗糙。树的身体已严重变形，爬伏在一个巨大石头缝隙间。树身细瘦，树身分成两个枝干，扭扭曲曲向上努力的伸展着。它吮吸着石缝间仅有的营养物质，艰难而又倔强地生长着。蜷缩的枝干上长满叶子，由于是秋天，叶子已经变得绿中泛着微黄，叶片不像健康的树那样肥厚，单薄地在秋风中瑟瑟地抖动着。我的心也随着它颤抖起来，我突然对它产生了无限的怜惜之情。倘若它遭遇狂飙暴雨侵袭，它该如何艰难地去支撑和面对？
它像绳索一样紧紧地缚住山石，丝毫也不敢懈怠。它倔强地生长着，极力想展示生命的辉煌。在这群山峻岭的石缝中，它顽强的呼吸着、抗争着、努力着、拼搏着。如果这是一种生存的本能，那么这种本能是多么的使人肃然起敬。生命的尊贵与壮丽，仿佛都蕴含在这不可扼制的生机里。
我曾为石缝间小草的细瘦修长而怜惜、我曾为石缝间碎小的花朵而流泪、我曾为石缝间藤蔓努力攀援的个性而感叹、我更为石缝间的这棵树生命力的顽劲坚韧而震撼！
那长在石缝间的绿色尤物，它具有比语言更有力的感召力。它给人以鼓舞、给人以力量。任凭风霜雪雨，依然坦然面对！这就是顽劲，这就是倔强，这就是坚韧，这就是生命的绚丽与辉煌！
安逸和养尊处优，就像肥沃的土地上生长的万物，虽然茁壮，但却缺少一种特质，一种震撼人心的力量，这种力量，可以韵味悠长地直抵人的心灵，甚至可以改变人的一生。
在艰苦的环境中，在困厄的境遇下，只有身经磨难、千锤百炼，才能造就一个人走向成功而永不言败。适者生存的自然规律虽然残酷，但一切适者，都是强者。
无畏年少青春，迎风潇洒前行
如果青春是醺人欲醉的海风，那么自信就是这和风前行的路标；如果青春是巍峨入云的高耸，那么拼搏就是这山脉层层拔高的动力；如果青春是高歌奋进的谱曲，那么坚强就是这旋律奏响的最强音！
回眸往昔，风流江山如画。抚摸着钟鼎上的甲骨铭文，青铜的纹理烙刻辉煌的过去，记录民族的兴衰；第一束阳光破开帷幕，新的世纪到来，这，是我们的纪元，是我们的天地，是我们一展才华的舞台。
