My Hometown—Inner Mongolia

Good morning ladies and gentlemen, today, I would like to introduce my beloved hometown—Inner Mongolia to all of you.It has been 57 years since the birth of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region on May 1st, 1947.Dominated by the Mongolian nationality, the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region is located on the northern frontier of China. The Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region occupies an area of 1.18 million square kilometers and has a population of about 20 million people who represent a score of different nationalities.Every time when people talk about Inner Mongolia, they’ll come down to the vast graland.Yes, the Inner Mongolian prairie area makes up a quarter of the total graland area of the country. On the boundle expanse of the Inner Mongolian prairie are living numerous sheep, Cattle and horses, on which our Mongolian have lived for generations. That is why the graland is eulogized as ―cradle of life‖.There are two vast gralands in my hometown—Hulun Buir Gralands and Xilin Gol Gralands which are both world-famous regions.People in Inner Mongolia are famous for their bravery, enthusiasm and hospitality. No mater where you are from, as long as you come to a herdsman’s house, you will be warmly entertained with roasted whole lamb and milk tea, and what’s more, you can also appreciate beautiful Mongolian songs and elegant dances. It is not exaggerating to say Mongolians are born singers and dancers. The moment you set your feet on the graland areas you will discover it is indeed a real land of songs and dances.

Today’s Inner Mongolia still maintains her ethnic characteristics and at the dame time, she tries to keep pace with the development of the modern world.Ordus is a worldwide well-known brand, Yili and Mengniu are both the famous dairy industries, which have greatly improved the living standard of our Mongolian people. And I’m sure, our Mongolian people will make great effort to contribute to our hometown. As a college student, I know quite clearly that my miion is to master solid knowledge and one day do good to my beloved hometown.

23 I can hadle it

I can hadle it

I can never forget the summer in 1996.I went through an extremity of despair due to my failure in the National College Entrance Examination. It seemed that my dream of being a university student would never come true. One evening my father came and told me the story of Steven Callahan, who was croing the Atlantic alone in his sailboat when it struck something and sank.It was a miracle that he survived and was found 76 days later(the longest anyone has survived a shipwreck on a life raft alone).Later in his narrative he wrote these sentences ―I tell myself I can handle it .Compared to what others have been through I’m fortunate‖.

Hearing these sentences I felt something important struck me.I belived my life would mot be that bad and it was proved to be true.Later during my study in the university I always told myself ―I can handle it‖ when my own goals seemed far off or when my problems seemed too overwhelming and every time I said it ,I always came back to my senses.

Now I work as an English teacher in a middle school.Whenever my students complain about their difficulties in study or want to give up, I will tell the same story of Callahan to them.I just want to make them believe they can handle their difficulties because their circumstances are only bad compared to something better. But others have been through much worse. Then they will build up fortitude.

So here, coming to us from the extreme edge of survival, are words that can give us strength.Whatever you’re going through, tell yourself you can handle it.Compared to what others have been through, you’re fortunate.Tell this to yourself over and over, and it will help you get through the rough spots with little more fortitude.

21 Me and my Fears

Me and my Fears

Honorable judges, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen:

It is a great honor and pleasure to be here on this beautiful Saturday morning to share with you my sentiments about life and paion for the English language.

About a year and a half ago, I took part in my very first English Speech Contest. When I stood before the microphone with all eyes starring directly at me, I could hardly speak.I stood there, embarraed and helple, struggling in vain for the right thing to say.My fears had paralyzed me.

While my paion for English has never changed, I lost my courage to speak in public. When my profeor again encouraged me to take part in this Competition, I said ―no.‖ I couldn’t endure yet another painful experience. He looked me straight in the eye and said something that pierced my heart.I will never forget his words.―Look,‖ he said, ―We all have our fears, and you have yours. You could twist your ankle in a basketball game, but then be afraid to ever play again.Running away can never dispel your fears, but action will.A winner is not one who never fails, but one who never quits.‖

I spent a whole day with his words twisting and turning in my mind. Then I made the bravest and wisest decision of my life: I would face my fears – and take part in the competition!

As it turned out, my dear old profeor was right. Now, here I am, once again standing before a microphone. My heart is beating fast, and my mouth is dry, but most importantly, I have faced my fears -- and that makes all the difference!

Thank you.

20 Knowledge collaboration and all-round education

Knowledge collaboration and all-round education

Ladies and gentlemen,

We engineering students take it for granted that technology is changing incredibly fast.We are thinking nervously and seriously whether our colleges are failing to provide a foundation in the skills currently needed in industry.Take my major telecommunications for example.Scientists say that 21st century is a biomedical time, not an electrical time. But without the help of electronic data proceing and transformation, biomedical technology alone cannot go too far.Funny enough, the word biomedical itself is just a combination of two disciplines. So the interdisciplinary exploitation serves as the critical part for our electric and electronics world as well as any other fields to find new way of being.

But the power of knowledge collaboration is certainly not restricted to science and engineering; it is in the full community of learning.Walking around campus I absorbed a reality that there is a seamle web between students from different profeional backgrounds. The engineering students are discuing animatedly in a philosophy lecture, speaking paionately in the public speaking club, and looking for sparkling ideas from learning history and arts. How wonderful that is! That, ladies and gentleman, is just a significant step forward to be well-rounded because once we jump out of the circle we can see the bigger picture.

My friends, I hope that you have already got what university is all about. Please let me end my speech with the Nobel Prize winner Li Zhengdao’s words: ―The realization of the perfect combination of science and engineering, science and arts, technology and humanity, is the greatest symbol of a university’s succe.‖ Thank you.

The Future Is Now-The Choice is yours

The Future Is Now-The Choice is yours

As two men were about to be sent into prison, the warden let each of them make a demand. The American loved smoking, so he wanted three boxes of cigars; while the Jew said all he needed was a telephone to contact with people outside of the prison. Two years later, the first out was the American who still had many cigars in his hands and pockets but was crying: ―Give me some matches!‖ Then the Jew walked out, he shook hands with the warden and said: ―Thank you for the phone, it made my busine increase by 200%.‖

What do you think of this story? Life today is what you’ve decided years ago, and so is the future: your decisions today will affect your destiny years later. Now I have two things to choose from: to go abroad, to find myself a decent job after graduation or to further my study as a postgraduate.I haven’t worked out an answer to this question yet, but I know that whatever I do will directly affect my future.

An Indian once said life is just like a game of cards, the cards in your hand represent opportunities, while the way you play decides the result you’ll get.Looking back in history, during World War Ⅱ, Churchill who led the British people resolved to expect ―blood, toil, tears and sweat‖.They won the victory then.Today Shenzhou 5 took the first Chinese astronaut into space.I am sure that later there’ll be more spacecrafts, like Shenzhou 6,7 and 8 ……

So what does the future look like? No one can tell. But I know the choice is yours, the future is now.Make good use of everyday, a man can achieve greater succees, a country can gain prosperity and the whole world can be united, as it has never been before.

18 LIFE IS A CHOICE

LIFE IS A CHOICE

In our daily lives, we have many choices to make, such as what to eat for supper, what clothes to wear, or what to do on weekends. At certain times in our lives, we need to make even more critical choices, such as which school to attend, what job to take or who to choose as husband or wife.Yes, life is a matter of choice.Seemimgly, it means a choice of tangible things. But in eence, it means choosing a way of life.Life is to be lived, savored, and enjoyed, not to be wasted or complained about.

Hardly can we forget the time when our society faced the grave threat from the life-and-death disease--SARS.Yet, even during those dreadful times, some afflicted people remained optimistic.Instead of wearing neutral white masks, some people turned to colouful ones, and thus display a happy mood. And some creative people dubbed SARS to mean \"SMILE AND REMAIN SMILING.\" I was deeply touched by their optimisim, nearly forgetting that we\'re still in a battle.people who survive these kinds of circumstances, (at some point)decide in their minds to carry on in spite of the overwhelming odds.

laid-off workers, typically regarded as the victims of economic advancement, are subject to desperation that being unmeployed has brought on them. But, encouragingly, we have witneed some of them striving hard to rebuild confidence toward life and discover new opportunities for demonstrating their values.

Although we cannot choose our appearance, inborn gifts and even avoid unexpected disasters and adversities, we do have the privilege to choose to live optimistcally,to love our lives, to have dreams, and to cherish hopes.

Every morning when we get up, we have a choice of how we want to approach life that day.As for me, I choose to be cheerful.

The House Debates Health Reform-

Good afternoon, everybody.I just want to say a few words about the landmark vote that the House of Representatives is poised to(随时准备着) take today -- a vote that can bring us one step closer to making real the promise of quality, affordable(支付得起) health care for the American people. For the better part of a year now, members of the House and the Senate have been working diligently(勤奋地) and constructively to craft legislation that will benefit millions of American families and millions of American businees who urgently need it.For the first time ever, they\'ve paed bills through every single committee responsible for reform.They\'ve brought us closer than we have ever been to paing health insurance reform on behalf of the American people. Now is the time to finish the job.The bill that the House has produced will provide stability and security for Americans who have insurance; quality, affordable options for those who don\'t; and lower costs for American families and American businees. And as I\'ve insisted from the beginning, it is a bill that is fully paid for and will actually reduce our long-term federal deficit(赤字,不足).This bill is change that the American people urgently need.Don\'t just take my word for it.Consider the national groups who\'ve come out in support of this bill on behalf of their members: The Consumers Union supports it because it will create -- and I quote -- \"a more secure, affordable health care system for the American people.\"

The American Medical Aociation and the American Nurses Aociation support it on behalf of doctors and nurses and medical profeionals who know firsthand what\'s broken in our current system, and who see what happens when their patients can\'t get the care they need because of insurance industry bureaucracies(官僚政治).The National Farmers Union supports this bill because it will control costs for farmers and ranchers(牧场主), and addre the unique challenges rural Americans face when it comes to receiving quality care. And the AARP supports it because it will achieve the goal for which the AARP has been fighting for decades -- reducing the cost of health care, expanding coverage for America\'s seniors, and strengthening Medicare for the long haul. Now, no bill can ever contain everything that everybody wants, or please every constituency(选区) and every district.That\'s an impoible task. But what is poible, what\'s in our grasp right now is the chance to prevent a future where every day 14,000 Americans continue to lose their health insurance, and every year 18,000 Americans die because they don\'t have it; a future where crushing costs keep small businees from succeeding and big businees from competing in the global economy; a future where countle dreams are deferred or scaled back because of a broken system we could have fixed when we had the chance. What we can do right now is choose a better future and pa a bill that brings us to the very cusp(尖头,尖端) of building what so many generations of Americans have sought to build -- a better health care system for this country.Millions of Americans are watching right now.Their families and their businees are counting on us.After all, this is why they sent us here, to finally confront the challenges that Washington had been putting off for decades -- to make their lives better, to leave this country stronger than we found it.

I just came from the Hill where I talked to the members of Congre there, and I reminded them that opportunities like this come around maybe once in a generation. Most public servants pa through their entire careers without a chance to make as important a difference in the lives of their constituents and the life of this country. This is their moment, this is our moment, to live up to the trust that the American people have placed in us -- even when it\'s hard; especially when it\'s hard. This is our moment to deliver.I urge members of Congre to rise to this moment.Answer the call of history, and vote yes for health insurance reform for America.
