Language is the carrier and reflection of culture.By the contrastive study of cultural connotations of color words between English and Chinese, we can know more about what is going on in people’s mind, in their language and culture.In addition, it is expected that this thesis may throw light on the use of color terms in intercultural communication, English language teaching and learning, and translation.Color terms are closely linked with culture.As a part of language, they are endowed with abundant cultural connotations.In addition, color terms’ lexical meaning and symbolic meaning reflect various cultures and cultural backgrounds.Therefore, a full understanding of color terms and their functions in the cultural transfer is eential in language education, translation and even cro-cultural communication.Color is a part of our life.Color words help us to understand the world around, like our sense of taste and smell.Words and phrases of different colors are abundant in both Chinese and English languages.Through long-term development of languages, the meanings of color words in each language have far surpa their original ones, as a result, originating a connotation in cultures.Due to the factors vary between Chinese and Western countries, such as national and historical background, traditional and habits peoples’ experience and aesthetic psychology of culture, the connotation of culture that reflected by the color words vary in a large extent.The connotation of color words is not only an eential means to cro-cultural communication, but also an important bridge, through which different cultures have the ability to carry forward their achievements and learn from each other.The previous scholars have studied the connotation of color words from different sides.Most of them concentrated on the symbolic meaning of the colors .For example, American anthropologist Verne F.Ray proposed that every color system aimed at putting the color word into order so as to simplify human’s perception of color, and further to make the action feedback, especially the speech feedback and communication more effective[1].This these pays attention to deeper connotation of different colors, which take the cultural backgrounds, traditions and habits, life experience etc.into consideration.Now let’s move on to the main part of the thesis ,as to chapter 1 ,I introduce the simple information of color words, Color words don’t necearily mean the same thing as colorful words, color terms are words which simply show different colors.Color words have their functions such as informative function and emotive function.Color words reflect the different cultural connotations in different languages ,the symbolic meanings of color words have different features in different cultural Chapter 2 is the most important part of the thesis ,It is talk about the comparative study of Chinese and English color words.Different nations have different cultures and take the different colors as special .As a part of vocabulary ,color words have different connotation in different lauguages,It is certain that color is related to history.Next are the influential factors of color words connotation, Historical culture refers to the culture that is formed by the developing proce of certainty history and social heritage which varied between nations at often times.Otherwise ,the factors of polit, psychology and religion also have an effect on the development of color words connotation .The thesis, aiming at improving color terms understanding and promoting cro-cultural communication, tries to explore the culture connotation of color terms at different cultural backgrounds through the methods of making a careful analysis of the lexical meaning and symbolic meaning of color terms.All in all, from the analysis and comparasion above, it can be concluded that there are abundant cultural connotations in the color words between Chinese and English languages,w hich show both similarities and differences as a result of cultural differences, in this way will we make le mistakes in the proce of using them, and improve our accuracy , flexibility in the use of language.
