Technical Report：Situation of the Use of Microblog among College

Students Abstract: 2010 can be regarded as \"the first year of Microblog” of china.During this year the concept of Microblog has been spreaded unprecedentedly.Some major portals opened Microblog channels such as Sina, Tencent.And the Competition between Sina and Tencent is increasingly fierce.Official data (by the end of October 2011) from Sina shows that Sina Microblog users has reached 200 million, and users publish more than 75 million Microblogs per day.

Keyword: Report, Microblog, Twitter, Survey, Questionnaire.

Microblog as the leader in new media and the version of \"Twitter\" in china, college students are the main force of Microblog users and they will determine the prospects and trends of Microblog.Because of that I stared a simple questionnaire to find the cu rrent situation of Microblog.I received 32 valid responses, in which 21 investigators are Microblog users, 11 are not.The following analysis is collecting results of the survey.

1.Who is the leader of Microblog

Through Google Trends comparison, It is apparent that the Google index

data of Sina Microblog is much higher than Tencent Microblog, Sina Microblog outshines the others.Although in the dry tree compare with Sina, Tencent Microblog has signature strengths over Netease and Sohu Microblog.

As we can infer from the figure above, this is drawn from my questionnaire.The statistics show that Sina Microblog has an occupation of 80.95%, which is in accordance with the Google Trends.It means that Sina Microblog has an absolute advantage.Under the Matthew effect, not surprisingly, other Microblogs will soon be out of this market.

Although there are a great number of Microblog users, It is observed that the situation of Microblog into real life is not as expected to be.Because more than half of respondents take Microblog as entertainment rather than a source of information.As a user of Microblog, I followed a great deal of users who is identified as official Microblog of newspapers, television programs, famous figure, etc.Attributable to that , I am the one who always acquires the breaking news.I experienced the advantage of Microblog and I look forward to more users will draw Microblog into everyone\'s life.3.Compared with traditional media

Statistics from two figures above show that almost half of respondents think that the most attractive aspect of Microblog is the speed of spreading information.28.57% consider Microblog can share information with various figures like musician, actor, etc.In addition to those features, Microblog also has the advantage of more freedom of speech.Few respondents bother the restrict of characters.4.Other Social Network Sites

Respondents also were asked that whether they have ever used other SNS in addition to Microblog.It turns out that 76.19% are using Renren and 23.81% using Qzone.Renren is the Chinese version of Facebook, and it was set up earlier than Microblog.Renren has a stable number of users.The opposition of Renren and Microblog has been just the same with the opposition of Facebook and Twitter.

5.The reason of not using Microblog

For the respondents who are not Microblog users.Some suggest they have no interest in Microblog, and some reveal that the Microblog is too complex to use ,which I think is a weird reason.They need to know the common knowledge of internet.6.About the freedom of speech

Freedom of speech compared with 10 years ago

Microblog brings us a relax and free environment.According to the survey, 38.34% thought they have more freedom than before, and 28.13% said there is no obvious difference.Others care little about this problem.It can be drawn from the result that Chinese has a relatively relax environment, but the government still has a great deal of work to do to realize the democratization proce.Based on the analysis above, Microblog is commonly used among college students, and it is expected to widespread extensively.Sina Microblog is the monopoly of both the number of users and published Microblogs.Microblog is a platform which the environment is relatively relaxed.Users can easily tweet their mood or share happine to their friends or followers.Microblog has the advantages of rapid and timely update, but short time of development and information are limited by words restrict the Microblog as an alternative of traditional media such as website, TV, cellphones, etc. The rise of Microblog has done enormous contribution to the freedom of speech but the domestic proce still need a long way to be achieved.
