本来以为真的会是一部恐怖小说，开头所讲的无头骑士，再加上小说中对于环境的各种描写无不在透露着恐怖气息，但是越往下看越发觉得鬼怪往往只存在于人心。根据标题以为会带着些许神秘气息，但是文章从头到尾反而让人感觉慢慢偏离了主题，离无头骑士越来越远，主人公成了一个无所是处，甚至是窝囊无能，只会耍小聪明的乡村教师，甚至这个教师只会在女人面前卖弄文采。但在慢慢介绍主人公甚至其心上人和情敌时，又不失对睡谷的描写，主人公的生活正是对睡谷里的生活的一种反映——安逸。而开头提到的无头骑士又在主人公的结局中出现，他象征着主人公爱情的失败以及内心世界的懦弱胆小。这时全文又好似前后呼应起来了。
