Gulliver’s Travel

As we all known, literature is stemmed from life, but higher than life.Writers expre their feelings, thoughts and ambitious by composing poems, novels, epics, fables, myths, fairy tales, dramas, etc.

In the early 18th century in England, under the ruling of corrupt and cruel

governors, the social contradictory was quite serious.English army invaded other countries and expanded colonies constantly. As the Chinese saying goes, the situations can generate heroes. Therefore, in such a black period, many excellent writers emerged, showing their diatisfaction towards society and government.

Jonathan Swift was one of them.He was famous as the great master of ironic novel. One of his masterpieces called Gulliver’s Travel gained its fame all over the world.

Being a remarkable ironic novel, Gulliver’s Travel manifested the ideology of Swift. And Swift interpreted the social reality of England through ironic and imaginary plots. The main role of this novel was Gulliver. He was a person who was keen on travelling and to travel every corner of the world was his dream. Thanks to Gulliver’s bravery and the enthusiasm of travelling, Gulliver guided us to four fantastic countries, including the Liliput , Brobdingnag,, Flying Island as well as Houyhnhnms.

The story begins with the country Liliput whose people are dwarves.Comparing with them, Gulliver was a giant. Here, Gulliver seemed invulnerable, and he could eat dozens of car food.Though the king of Liliput was a fingernail taller the height of

common men, he boasted himself as the ruler of universe. And he often decided the destiny of his men by virtue of his own temperament. The most ridiculous was that the officials were not supposed to have both ability and political integrity.Their positions and salary were judged by the height their rope skipping. The higher they skipped, the better their status and pay was.Actually, the Liliput seemed to be quite different from England. However, it was a reflection of England.By means of reading it, readers can learn the absurd reality of England that time.

Besides, there were two parties in Liliput. They distinguished each other by the height of the heel of shoe. They were the manifestation of the Troy Party and the Whig party in England. In addition, the people of Liliput started a war just for a debate which even brought disaster to the neighbor country.Because of the general mood of false accusations, Gulliver had to escape.

Contrary to the Liliput, the people of Brobdingnag were giants. They were more powerful than the dwarves in terms of strength and intelligence. It was a monarchy whose king was sagacious and righteous. He loved his men and the law ensured their freedom and welfare. When Gulliver mentioned of the situations of England, the king criticized the flaw of law and pointed out that the selfishne of people was the root. This journey directly exposed the defects of England.

Then it was Flying Island. The science here was beyond imagination and reality.People engaged in many special scientific researches.Especially to those residents who lived around, once they rebelled, the flying island would float above the land to obstruct the sunlight or landed on the ground to crush the people to die.It was the

very actuality of England.

Of course, Gulliver’s Travel was immitted the ideal of Swift. That was another country-- Houyhnhnms. It was a unique country in that the citizens here were horses. And what made us surprised was that these horses were extremely kind, sincere and had all kinds of virtues. There were no words like lie or cheat in their language.Everything was authentic and transparent so that Gulliver had a good time there.Houyhnhnms was a heaven to everyone.Facing with the world which right, position and wealth dominated, people were too tired to bear.It is similar with the

Peach-bloom Spring of Chinese poet Tao Yuanming.By creating these fictive places, both of them showed their aspiration of a harmony world.

Swift satirized England and depicted its greed, partisanship, hypocrisy,

faithlene, envy, desire, etc.He wryly stated the reversal of human beings and animals. He talked about the nature of human beings who were enslaved by money. After reading this novel, we also can benefit and learn something from it-- inspect ourselves and we can see that we have these drawbacks as them.

Gulliver’s Travel presented us a peculiar world. We can see not only the darkne of the world but the sunshine in writer’s heart, which makes us yearn for.We expect that one day the world is suffused with love and virtue rather than trick and evil.
