Good morning, all appraiser committee members and schoolmates.I am Li Juxing from 0801 and my supervisor is Profeor Zhang Meijuan. With her constant encouragement and guidance, I have finished my paper. Now, it is the show time.I will present my efforts to you and welcome any correction.

The title of my paper is an analysis of different cultural connotations about the animal words in English and Chinese.I choose this as my topic due to the following reasons.Firstly, I am fond of animals.I have raised lots of animals like dogs, rabbits and birds since I was very young. And I am interested in everything about animals very much.Secondly, in the Cro-Culture cla given by Profeor Yan Chuanhai, I know there exists some cultural connotation differences about animal words between English and Chinese, and I want to know more about it.Last but not the least, cultural differences exist in languages of all nations and due to the influence of different factors, such as history, religion and convention, animal words of different languages have special cultural connotations of different cultures. In Chinese and English, animal words with their established rich cultural connotations may result in misunderstanding in communication. For example, dogs are usually regarded as pretty valued companions in the west.Suppose that a Chinese person wins the first prize in a lottery ticket, his friends from Britain may say that “you are really a luck dog!” to congratulate him.But the Chinese person maybe gets angry because in China, “dog” is traditionally regarded as a kind of disgusting animal in many people’s eyes, and the word “dog” in most Chinese minds is aociated with some derogatory connotations. However, in the west, dogs are regarded as pretty valued companions and “dog” can be used to make people get the expreion of friendship, sincerity and faith in English.

In order to improve peoples’ ability of language using and reduce the communicative misunderstanding, it is worthwhile to make an analysis of cultural connotations about animal words in English and Chinese.I hope by studying this topic, people can know more about the differences of different cultures more clearly and exactly. And help people have a better understanding of both English and Chinese cultures, which to some extent, can develop peoples’ intercultural communication

competence , thus they can use words in the real communication as appropriately as poible.

Next, it is an outline of my paper. The thesis adopts a method of contrastive analysis and consists of six parts:

Part1 and Part 2 introduce the topic of the thesis briefly and focus on the some basic concepts in the thesis.

Part 3 is the main part. And it makes the comparison of English and Chinese connotations of animal words from three aspects:

1、animal words with similar cultural connotations For example, the word “pig” and “猪” share the same cultural connotations in English and Chinese, when people talk about “pig”, both English and Chinese prefer to think of stupidity and dirtine.

2、animal words with different cultural connotations. The expreion “a lucky dog” we mentioned above is a good example

3、different animal words with similar cultural connotations. For instance, in Chinese, “cow” is the symbol of diligence. We often use “老黄牛 (willing ox or plodder)” to refer to a person who is working hard without any complaint, while in English the similar saying is “a willing horse (埋头苦干的人)”.Here, two different words “cow” and “horse” share the same meaning.

Part 4 discues three main reasons for cultural connotation differences: the factor of history, religion and convention. Then Part 5 deals with some inspirations or suggestions for English learners. In a word, that is to try the best make use of various ways to enhance the learning of backgrounds of English culture for the purpose of reducing the barrier in the cro-cultural communication.

Finally, in the conclusion, the author summarizes the previous parts and emphasizes the significance of the argument of the thesis again.

Ok, that\'s all. Thanks for your attention. Now you may raise your questions! I am ready! Thank you!
