Flying without own wings?
Dear mother,
I am writing to share my feelings on the heated discuion over parenting of Tiger Mother—Chua, I see myself in her daughters’ portrait. The experience of Chua’s two daughters reminds me of my childhood.Seeing my peers practicing musical instruments, you made up your mind to push me into learning the violin.Neverthele, I was extremely reluctant to learn playing the violin at the age of six when I did not even know what a violin was.Since then, our battle began. Each day, I was obliged to practice for two hours. No matter how hard I worked, and how dutifully I obeyed your commands, it was never enough. How I wish you could put yourself in my shoes to see how much I have suffered for I could not decide on my own!
There was also a fierce battle between us on your forcing me to study calligraphy. As you say, writing calligraphy would shape an artistic temperament. However, this time I rebelled. How would the kids feel if the parents do not put themselves into their position?
I could not imagine a world where parents decide everything for their children.Deciding everything for children sends the meage that they can never gain independence. What will the kids learn if the parents always rule out their decision? How can they establish their auredne? How can they work and live if there is no independent decision making?
Children need their parents\' guidance and support in order to develop real independence, but it is not appropriate if their parents decide everything for them.
Thinking is the wing of human. Please give me a pair of my own wings, and let me fly freely.
Yours sincerely,
Daughter
