The Gap between Reality and Ideal
A traveling salesman made his car fall into a tangle of immense grapevines.R.J.Bowman, a traveling salesman, was driving his Ford on his way to sell shoes after having been ill for a long time.While thinking about the changes he had made to himself in the past fourteen years, he found himself driving on an unknown road.Without the habit of asking the way, he drove straightly and finally made his car fall into a tangle of immense grapevines.
The poor couple’s persistent pursuit of their own life aroused sick R.J.Bowman’s desire for happy life and warmth.The poor couple had insisted on their own living style, and they did live a simple but happy life.After the misunderstanding of this poor couple had disappeared, Bowman realized that he himself also wanted to live with warmth and happine.
The real life Bowman lived was only to pursue the material satisfaction, which was quite different from his real desire for life.Unlike the past, the fourteen years’ efforts made he be able to live a better life, but also made him be a lonely and diocial person.The affects he had made just to satisfy his material life, which had made him lonely in his mind.
The ideal life for Bowman was to live with warmth and love.It could be seen in the novel that he wished that the child were his, which showed his desire for family life.But when he came to know the fact that his imagined wife was conceiving a new life with another man, he felt disappointed and left.In the end, he fell down at the cold night on his cold journey.The gap between reality and ideal made Bowman suffer a great deal of pain, which he was afraid to let others know, even though no one noticed.Bowman was destined to be miserable since he could not accept the contradictions between real life he lived and the desire of his ideal life.Which also showed the contradictions of his character.
